Writing content for your website can be a tough obstacle in developing your online presence. Here are a few things we recommend to our clients and try to stick to ourselves!
1. Use your own voice. We all tend to get into a weird, not-us, robotic or overly cheerful tone when writing something we think others will read. It comes off sounding forced and unnatural so instead, trying reading your text out loud and imagine you’re in a conversation with a friend. If it sounds or feels odd to you, it’s probably not quite you.
If you never say “swoon” in real life or if you’re usually someone who says “hell” instead of “heck”, stick to those things in your writing. Be authentic; your readers will appreciate it!
2. Start from the middle. Usually, the toughest parts to write are the first and last sentences so instead of sitting and staring at a blank screen, try to put a few words or thoughts together. Start one, random sentence that you know you want but aren’t sure where it will go, and go from there. Often times, one thought leads into another and you'll be able to come up with several sentences before you know it.
3. Take breaks. If nothing is coming to you, stop for a bit. Go on a walk, eat a snack, do something else for a little while and then come back to your writing. Give yourself the space and time to be inspired and let the thoughts come to you naturally rather than trying to force something your brain isn't in the mood for.
4. Keep it simple (stupid!) You don’t need to write a novel on any page of your website. To be honest, your readers probably don’t have the time or desire to read several paragraphs or pages of text on your site anyway, so why stress over delivering it? Think quality over quantity - write a handful of interesting sentences that get to the point of what you’re trying to communicate and leave it at that. You can always add more later if you find it’s necessary.
